Charter Schools and PSPs in the IE

Charter schools and PSPs are two of the four options for legal homeschooling in California. For more info on the other two types of homeschooling in CA go here.

The main differences between a charter and a PSP
:

Charter schools:

  • Public schools funded by the government and your student is considered a public school student.
  • Depending on the school they may offer educational funds which can be used to pay for curriculum and activities or they may provide a pre-determined curriculum for free.
  • Many charter schools honor parent choice for methods and curriculum including the use of religious materials as long as those materials are not turned in as work samples and charter funds are not used to purchase them.
  • Most charter schools require meetings with an assigned credentialed teacher (commonly called ES- Education Specialist or EF- Education Facilitator) every 20 school days, work samples several times per year and standardized testing.
  • Many charter schools provide field trips, park days, graduation ceremonies, dances, student classes, parent training, resource libraries, etc.

Private Satellite Programs:

  • PSPs are private umbrella schools and your student is considered a private school student
  • PSPs charge tuition fees paid by families and provide varying degrees of record keeping services for attendance, testing, curriculum choice, etc.
  • PSPs provide varying levels of service depending on the school and tuition amount and may include park days, field trips, meetings, testing, classes, sports programs, yearbooks, etc.
Below is a list of some of the Charter School and Private School Satellite Programs available to families living in the IE.

* Please note that this list may not be current or complete. I am a busy mom and only update this site about once or twice a year.
If you would like your charter or PSP added to this list please contact me at trishwelham@gmail.com. Thank you for your understanding. :)
